How to Stop Vintage Aisle Rugs From Moving

The most popular trend for outdoor ceremonies right now is overlapping a bunch of mismatched vintage Persian rugs to create a custom aisle over the grass. I absolutely love the way it looks. I spent months buying five different wool rugs from various estate sales to do exactly this.

What nobody mentions in the aesthetic photos is that grass is slippery.

During our dress rehearsal, I laid all five rugs out in a beautiful overlapping pattern. My maid of honor started walking down the makeshift aisle in her heels. On her third step, the heel of her shoe caught the thick wool edge of the second rug. The entire rug slid forward on the dry grass like a surfboard. She nearly fell face-first into the folding chairs.

You cannot just lay heavy textiles on top of a lawn and expect them to stay put, especially when people are walking on them in formal shoes.

I had to run to the hardware store the morning of the wedding and buy a massive box of thick steel landscape staples. We spent an hour meticulously pinning the corners and edges of every single rug directly into the dirt. We had to use a rubber mallet to pound the metal staples deep enough so nobody would trip over the tops of them. If you want the vintage rug aesthetic, buy the heavy landscape pins. Otherwise, you are just building a very expensive slip and slide for your wedding party.
